Welcome to Sonneti Academy
Sonneti Academy, which has now become an Island of discipline and an academic giant, is situated in the outskirts of Timboni in Watamu, Gede Division in the Malindi District of Kenya. Kenya has 8 provinces and Malindi is in Coast province (click here for a map of Kenya). The school is 100m from the main road heading to Debaso village.
Mangi Anderson Yaa opened the school in September 2000. We first visited Kenya in July 1997 where we met Mangi who was employed in the hotel we stayed at. We have returned to Kenya each year since then mainly due to the warm nature of the people we have encountered.
We first visited the school in July 2001 and found it a completely humbling experience that someone with so little could take the time and effort to achieve what Mangi has in such a short space of time.
From our first visit to the school we have tried to do as much as possible to assist Mangi in any way, as have many other people who also return year after year. So much has changed in the short time the school has been open but we now feel the time has come to do even more. This site has been set up as a resource for all of us who already know Mangi and the school but mainly to show what has already been done and what needs to be done in the future. Most of the information on this site has been written by school director Mangi himself. I am sure at some point you will have to read something more than once to understand what he is trying to say but I felt it was important for the content to be delivered as Mangi had intended it to be.
